Toulon, France
Our first stop was supposed to be Cannes but at 5pm on departure day, they announced that there would be a change. The problem with Cannes was that we didn't have a dock. It would be a "tethering" which means dropping anchor and being shuttled to shore on small boats. We did this at Santorini on our '07 cruise. The problem was the wind so instead of Cannes, we were headed to Toulon.
We were the only ones who were actually happy with this change. There were a lot of people making phone calls. Anyone signed up for a Celebrity excursion was automatically reimbursed but those who had made private arrangements were kind of stuck.
Daniel's sister was vacationing in Hyères and was planning on making the long drive to Cannes. Toulon, by contrast, was only 20km away.
The problem is that Toulon is definitely not Cannes. There isn't much to do and to make things worse, it was Sunday and everything but restaurants, was closed. There was a big shopping mall and too bad for us, even though there were things we needed.
Here are the girls with their cousin and the ship in the background.
Davina and her charming self, then posing with the ship.
We wandered around this promenade a lot.
Toulon is basically a navel base. Kind of like San Diego with way less planes flying overhead (and much, much smaller).
Here is the family photo. From left to right; Claude, Talia Samantha, Françoise, Daniel, Davina, Nicholas and Ronnie.
Goodbye Toulon!
The ship always displays the host country's flag.
